In the glittering heart of Los Angeles, Elyse Santiago finds a new life far from her roots in the sultry Miami mangroves. An enchanting social media persona shares her passion for plants, but behind her smile hides a haunted past, a lethal secret, and the tormenting voice of the man she thought she’d silenced forever.

Krysten’s Review

On the outside, it might seem like nature is being cruel. But aren’t we all fighting for a place in the light?

This book was fresh, well written, and intriguing. The author does a great job drawing the reader in and making them feel what the characters are feeling—and it runs the gamut, from discomfort and disgust to love and hope, and everything in between. In the end, I felt both relieved and conflicted.

What makes the conflict even worse is the fact that most of the characters are terrible people—borderline irredeemable. But they’ve also been through terrible experiences, so you want them to win, even as they cross the line over and over again. It was like watching like a car wreck—awful but also intriguing, something you just can’t force yourself to look away from, even though you know you should because what you’re seeing is so horrifying, it’s going to wreck you. But you have to know what happens, even if it makes you an accomplice, and you have to keep all these terrible secrets.

This is a “book one,” and given the ending (which felt mostly wrapped up, if a bit open ended), I am very curious about that comes next in this series. This was a great debut novel, and if you like dark romance and suspense, I highly recommend it!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
