They Are The Hunters by Faith Gardner
Krysten’s Review
“We’re not bad people. It’s just that sometimes, in life, you come to a place where it’s you or someone else. That’s nature. That’s survival. It’s simple math. You or them. Who do you choose?”
In usual Faith Gardner fashion, They Are The Hunters is a twisty psychological thriller featuring a cast of seemingly innocuous characters who are anything but. Though set outside the world of the Jolvix Episodes, this novel also plays with the darker side of humanity and makes the reader question whether you can ever truly know or trust anyone, including those closest to you. Even yourself.
I enjoyed the story, though the first half was a bit slow as you get to know the five main characters through chapters from each of their POVs. Faith strings the reader along through the seemingly mundane, everyday lives of the Hunter family, dropping hints here and there that these people are not who they appear to be—even to themselves—until finally all their buried secrets are revealed and things go off the rails in the lead-up to the final unexpected twist.
I do think that the book description gives away a little too much, and some of the twists would have been much more impactful if they hadn’t been spelled out in the blurb. Either way, I enjoyed the book and I love Faith’s writing style, so I’ll definitely be back for whatever she puts out next!
