“Bean” Holladay is 12 and her sister, Liz, is 15 when their artistic mother, Charlotte, takes off to find herself, leaving her girls enough money to last a month or two. When Bean returns from school one day and sees a police car outside the house, she and Liz decide to take the bus to Virginia, where their widowed Uncle Tinsley lives in the decaying mansion that’s been in Charlotte’s family for generations.

Krysten’s Review

Overall an entertaining read — quick and easy. It wasn’t exactly what I thought before I started reading it… the way the cover description reads “then something happens to Liz,” I was expecting something more of a mystery. All the characters were well-developed and I knew immediately whether I liked them or not. I loved Bean — she was so spunky and smart, and she spoke her mind. I also really liked Uncle Tinsley, Aunt Al and Joe. And Uncle Clarence! One of my favorite parts of the book was when he finally “stood up to” Maddox.

One thing that bothered me was the way the author ended the story (much like many of the individual chapters) was abrupt and somewhat jarring. A few questions remain, but I guess Walls is leaving them up to the reader’s own interpretation.
