My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I’m torn about this book. On the one hand, the concept was intriguing. On the other hand, the execution was disappointing and the writing borderline amateurish. It was a gripping page turner, and yet slow and even underwhelming in quite a few places. The characters were flawed and relatable, but their actions were often incongruous. The beginning and middle were messy, but the ending was neat and clean. There are so few clues dropped for the first ~75% of the story, and you’re trying to figure out what kind of person would devise such an evil game… and then it’s like a waterfall of clues dropped all at once, so it’s not even a surprise when the villains are revealed.

Hence, I’m torn.

Overall, an enjoyable read, but in the end, I was left feeling slightly unsatisfied with several bothersome questions remaining.
