Night Road by Kristin Hannah
Krysten’s Review
I don’t usually read books like this one, but I’m glad I read Night Road. There are few books that have made me cry, and this is one of them.
The characters are so likable (except I had a hard time liking Jude, as both a helicopter mom and the withdrawn shell of grief she became) and real, you just can’t help but ache for them as they try to get through their pain. I was immediately drawn to Lexi, whose life has been nothing but sadness and disappointments. Even though she played a key role in the tragedy that tore the family apart, I still felt sympathetic towards her and wanted everything to work out for her, somehow.
I would guess that most real-life stories like this one don’t end happily the way Night Road did (and truthfully, the ending and everyone’s simultaneous epiphanies were a little rushed), but there was enough realness to make it seem authentic, not forced and unrealistic. It would have been nice if there was an epilogue so you can see how the family comes back together and how what they learned from the tragedy changed the course of their future, but all in all it was a satisfying ending that made me feel hopeful.
