Do you ever get creeped out when walking in parking garages alone at night? I do. That’s because in a very early draft of my next novel, Unreliable Source, I had my heroine Jennifer witness a murder in a parking garage. To protect his identity, the killer then drugged her and left her unconscious on the cold cement floor.
Don’t let this happen to you! This October during National Crime Prevention Month, here are some tips for staying safe after dark, especially for my fellow womenkind.
- Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Always be mindful of your environment. Avoid distractions like looking down at your phone or wearing headphones, as these can make you less aware of potential threats. Stay alert, especially in dimly lit or unfamiliar areas.
- Stick to Well-Lit, Busy Areas: Whenever possible, walk in well-lit, populated areas, avoiding shortcuts through alleys or isolated paths. If you’re driving, park in well-lit spots close to building entrances, and have your keys ready as you approach your vehicle.
- Trust Your Instincts & Have an Exit Strategy: If something feels off, trust your gut and move to a safer location. Whether you’re in a parking lot, public space, or using public transport, have a plan for where you can go or who you can call if you feel unsafe.
- Carry Personal Safety Devices: Carry a personal alarm, whistle, or pepper spray. These small devices can be easily accessed in your purse or pocket and may deter an attacker if used quickly.
- Stay Connected: Let someone know your whereabouts, especially if you’re traveling alone at night. Use apps like “Find My Friends” or share your location with a trusted friend or family member to ensure someone is aware of your route and arrival time.
