Cold case expert Evangeline Reed and forensics legend Harry Steinbeck are on their way from Minneapolis to Costa Rica. They’ve been ordered to keep close watch on a protective mother and her daughter, both of whom have troubling connections to a Minnesota serial killer. Are they on holiday? In hiding? Or on the run?

Krysten’s Review

Catch Her in a Lie by Jess Lourey is the fifth installment in Amazon’s Getaway collection, a series of six short stories featuring exotic vacations that take unimaginable, even sinister, turns.

“They studied each other, two women inside a Costa Rican hotel room staring at each other across space and time, a truth both bright and confusing connecting the two of them.”

Gorgeous cover. The story was well written with some lovely sensory details and a rare happy ending for a mystery. However, I found it to be a bit predictable, even with the supernatural twist. The characters were just okay; at no point did I really feel invested in them or their lives. Overall I found the story to be enjoyable, but I’m not sure I would seek out anything else by this author. Perhaps with more space, the author would be better able to develop both the mystery and the characters, but a skilled writer should be able to do this no matter how short or long the story is.
